Two Tennessee community college presidents are among the 46 members of the Leadership Tennessee Class of 2020 announced Monday by the statewide leadership initiative.

Dr. Rebecca Ashford, president of Chattanooga State Community College, and Dr. Bethany Flora, president of Northeast State Community College, are among the seven educators -- five from higher education -- selected for the new Leadership Tennessee class.

The Tennessee Board of Regents will consider combined tuition and fee increases at the state’s community and technical colleges averaging 2.45 percent at its June 21 quarterly meeting, under recommendations approved today by the board’s Finance and Business Operations Committee.

The College System of Tennessee’s Marketing and Digital Strategies team won nine awards from the Tennessee College Public Relations Association at their annual statewide conference May 24. TCPRA is an alliance of communicators and marketing that represents Tennessee's public and private colleges and universities.

The committee will meet again June 4 to consider and vote on its tuition and fee recommendations to the full board.

Pellissippi State Community College broke ground today on a new academic building on its Hardin Valley Campus and announced that the building has been named the Bill Haslam Center for Math and Science.

As governor of Tennessee from 2011 to 2019, Haslam was key to establishing Tennessee Promise and Tennessee Reconnect, last-dollar scholarships that provide two years of tuition-free attendance at a community or technical college in Tennessee.

State and local officials broke ground today for construction of the new $16.9 million Bartlett Campus of the Tennessee College of Applied Technology Memphis.

The campus is tentatively scheduled to open and begin training students in several high demand fields by Fall 2020.

The Cyber Defense Program at Jackson State Community College is the only community college program in Tennessee to be certified as a National Center of Academic Excellence by the U.S. National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security.

The Tennessee Board of Regents today appointed Mike Whitehead as the next president of the Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Pulaski, effective April 1.

The board’s unanimous vote for the appointment occurred during its quarterly meeting in Nashville and ends a four-month search. Whitehead has been vice president of TCAT Pulaski since August 2015 and succeeds Tony Creecy, who retired Jan. 2 after 33 years of service at the college.

Other agenda items include new training programs at nine technical colleges, routine revisions to TBR policies, and updates on research partnerships and Gov. Bill Lee’s budget recommendations for higher education.

The College System of Tennessee will honor its outstanding students, faculty and campus staff – and the College of the Year – during its first Statewide Outstanding Achievement Recognition (SOAR) celebration March 19-20 in Nashville.

The two days of activities will include judging and a dinner for finalists in each of the SOAR Award individual categories; a Student Honors Luncheon honoring members of the Phi Theta Kappa All-Tennessee Academic Team and the National Technical Honor Society, and the annual Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Day on the Hill.
