Southwest to offer classes at UT Martin Somerville Center

Southwest Tennessee Community College will host a ribbon cutting & open house for its newest location at the University of Tennessee at Martin's Somerville Center from 4- 6 p.m., Aug. 13, at 214 Lakeview Road in Somerville.

The Somerville Site is Southwest’s seventh location in the region and allows students in the Fayette County area the convenience of completing community college coursework without commuting into Shelby County.  The goal is to provide Southwest students access to a tuition-free education as they prepare to enter the workforce or continue their education at UT Martin and beyond.

“We are proud to partner with the University of Tennessee at Martin Somerville Center.  This partnership empowers us to provide a seamless pathway to a credential, a career or continued education at UT Martin and other colleges for Fayette County residents,” said Southwest President Dr. Tracy D. Hall.

Beginning with the upcoming Fall Semester, which opens later this month, Southwest will offer 8 freshman-level courses designed to give Fayette County residents a running start in college from the comfort of their home county. They are: Introduction to Business, English Composition 1, English Support, Introduction to Statistics-Enhanced, Support Course for MATH 1530, Pre-calculus Algebra, Reading Support of ACAD 1100, and Academic Success Seminar. The courses are transferrable to UT Martin through the Tennessee Transfer Pathway for those wishing to complete four-year degrees. Additional degree programs will become available over the next year to allow full degree availability within the next 12-18 months.

Senior leadership from the colleges and community leaders will participate in the ribbon cutting and open house, and Southwest admissions counselors will be on-site to help students get ready for fall.

Everyone is welcome to attend the free event. There will be refreshments and door prizes for book scholarships and Southwest swag.  RSVP at Eventbrite at Southwest Somerville Site Grand Opening Celebration.
