Board of Regents to meet Oct. 20 to consider presidential appointment at TCAT Shelbyville, criteria for next presidents of Volunteer State Community College & TCAT Harriman
The Tennessee Board of Regents will hold a special called meeting Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, to consider approving the chancellor’s recommendation for the next president of Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Shelbyville. The board will also consider proposed criteria for the next presidents of Volunteer State Community College and TCAT Harriman.
The board governs Tennessee’s public community colleges and colleges of applied technology. The meeting will be held by teleconference at 9:30 a.m. CT/10:30 ET, Oct. 20, and will be live-streamed and archived on the TBR website at: https://www.tbr.edu/board/october-20-2023-%E2%80%93-special-called-board-meeting. Board materials, including the proposed presidential search criteria for the two colleges, are posted at the same link. Anyone needing direct access to the Microsoft Teams teleconference, other than the livestream access, should contact Board Secretary Mariah Perry at mariah.perry@tbr.edu or 615-366-3927 by 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19.
For the TCAT Shelbyville presidency, Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor Flora W. Tydings will recommend to the board one candidate from among three finalists selected by a search advisory committee last month: Dr. Sidney Hill, provost of Madisonville Community College in Kentucky; Daniel Owens, director of business operations at TCAT Murfreesboro, and Jimmy L. Wright, chief student affairs officer at Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Kentucky.
The finalists participated in public forums and interviews Sept. 27. Dr. Tydings is reviewing feedback and comment from the forums and conducting final interviews to make her recommendation to the board, which appoints all college presidents in the system. The finalists’ resumés and information about the search are available on the TCAT Shelbyville presidential search webpage at https://www.tbr.edu/hr/executivesearches/president-tcat-shelbyville.
The next president will succeed Dr. Laura Monks, who retired last month after six years as the college’s chief executive officer and 30 years of service in the TBR system.
The board will also consider criteria for the next presidents of Volunteer State Community College and TCAT Harriman. Vol State President Dr. Orinthia Montague unexpectedly passed away Sept. 22, and TBR Executive Vice Chancellor Russ Deaton is serving as interim president while the search for the college’s next president is underway. At TCAT Harriman, President Danice Turpin plans to retire in February.
Persons who want to request to address the board regarding the special meeting agenda items should follow the process authorized by the Requests to Address the Board Policy here: https://policies.tbr.edu/policies/requests-address-board.
