Chancellor David Gregory's statement regarding the campus gun bill

With news today that Governor Haslam will allow the faculty/staff campus carry bill to become law without his signature, Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor David Gregory provided the following statement:

"We take seriously our responsibility to provide safe learning environments for our students, safe work places for our faculty and staff, and safe campuses for friends and families to visit. TBR strongly and consistently opposed the legislation to allow guns on our campuses for that reason. Our police chiefs and public safety officers will face greater challenges when responding to emergency situations with the complexity this law adds to their responsibilities. That said, it is now incumbent upon us and our institutions to ensure the guidelines are clearly articulated and do all we can to help our campuses remain safe for all. We will work closely with legal staff and police officers to support those efforts. Our TBR Safety and Security Task Force will continue its important mission. And we pray that anyone who chooses to carry a gun on a college campus intently complies with all safety practices, legal guidelines and defined restrictions to help avoid accidents.”
