Jerry Young appointed director of Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Morristown

The Tennessee Board of Regents appointed Jerry S. Young as the new director at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Morristown during the board's regular quaterly meeting Friday, March 31.

TBR Chancellor Flora Tydings recommended  Young for the appointment, effective April 1, following the work of a search committee that received 32 applicatons for the position.

Young has been director of the Tennessee College of Applied Technology - Crossville since 2014. He began his career with the TBR System in 1988 as a senior instructor in electronics technology at the Crossville campus. He served as assistant director there from 2005 until his appointment as director in 2014.

As director at Crossville, Young initiated a capital building project that will add a diesel repair program and expand the hybrid electric vehicle program. The project's design phase is completed and is moving into the bid process. The school's enrollment increased over 30 percent during his tenure as director.

He holds a bachelor of science degree from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y., and a master of arts from the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky. 

Prior to joining the College of Applied Technology faculty, Young served in the U.S. Navy from 1980 to 1985 as an electronics technician first class. He received his training in electronics at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill. He worked as a field service engineer for Combustion Engineering in Macon, Ga., from 1986 to 1988.

At the Morristown campus, Young succeeds Jerry M. Patton, who retired Dec. 31, and interim director Susanne Cox.

The Board of Regents appointed a 15-member search committee, chaired by Regent Danni Varlan, to receive applications, review candidates and select finalists for the next director. The committee included representatives of the college’s faculty, staff and students, the Morristown community and the region.
