Key definitions/acronyms
- FOCUS Act – The Focus on College and University Success (FOCUS) legislation introduced by Governor Bill Haslam in 2015 and passed by the General Assembly in 2016.
- TCATs – Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology.
- SACs – Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. (SACSCOC – the organization’s commission on colleges – is the main accrediting body for TBR community colleges and universities.)
- THEC – The Tennessee Higher Education Commission (www.tn.gov/thec).
- Chargeback – funding provided by the colleges and universities in the TBR System that provides the finances to operate the TBR System Office.
- State University and Community College System – The system also known as the Tennessee Board of Regents, or TBR.
- TBR – Tennessee Board of Regents – the name of the governing board for the State University and Community College System, and also the name of the governing board for the system’s community colleges and colleges of applied technology.
- A&D funds – Access and diversity funding.
- Public Chapter – The statutory number assigned to a bill once it is signed into law. The FOCUS Act public chapter number is 869.
- TCA - Tennessee Code Annotated, the official compilation of state laws (public chapters).
- State University Board or Local Governing Board - The new governing boards for each of the six state universities authorized by the FOCUS Act.
