The Tennessee Board of Regents today named the building housing the Tennessee College of Applied Technology Murfreesboro’s Smyrna Campus and Nissan Training Center as “The Bill Haslam Center” in honor of Gov. Bill Haslam.
The Board also approved a resolution summarizing Gov. Haslam’s work and accomplishments for higher education and Tennessee students – including the groundbreaking Tennessee Promise and Tennessee Reconnect programs – and expressing gratitude to him for his service as both Governor and chair of the Board of Regents.

More than 80,000 students open a new academic year today at Tennessee’s 13 public community colleges, where they’ll find an array of new facilities, programs and welcome back celebrations.

Twenty-eight of the state’s highest achieving community college students were honored at a special ceremony in Nashville Tuesday, Feb. 13.
Representing Tennessee’s 13 Community Colleges, the outstanding students recently were named to the 2018 Phi Theta Kappa All-Tennessee Academic Team. Each student – many accompanied by their local state senators and representatives – was recognized and presented with a medallion during the luncheon at War Memorial Auditorium. After the luncheon, the students toured the State Capitol and met with Gov. Bill Haslam.

The Tennessee Board of Regents voted unanimously today to appoint Dr. Flora Tydings as the next chancellor of the Board of Regents system – its ninth chief executive officer since the system’s creation in 1972. She has been president of Chattanooga State Community College since July 2015 and prior to that was a leader for 19 years in the public Technical College System of Georgia.

The Tennessee Board of Regents will meet in a special called session Tuesday, Dec. 27, to consider a recommendation for the appointment of Dr. Flora Tydings as the next chancellor of the Board of Regents system. She has has been president of Chattanooga State Community College since July 2015, and was president of Athens Technical College in Athens, Ga., a campus of the public Technical College System of Georgia, from 2003 to 2015.
